No rehearsal-just get on the stage and play. My band was there playing and Frank was on stage introducing the bands. RM: Let's talk about the Jefferson Starship. I gotta get out for a while. And they said, Well, what do you mean? And I said, Thats exactly what I mean, is what Im saying. I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. I use it to find out how I'm playing-where I rush or where I slow down. But you gotta know that Herbie built that band around Neal, and Gregg Rolie too, and then brought in Aynsley and Ross. This was in the 80s? And maybe its just my opinion. So I did. I only know that theyve been through three guys, and Ive never heard any of em, and theres no need to. But he didn't really extend my feelings-he just helped me understand something I wanted to be doing, which was reading music. I was recording up to the day before I went to Europe, Singer recalled. Journey made three records for Columbia with that line up. Did you have to go to London? And so I started a long process, seeing many doctors, and the guys got impatient. I called Jonathan around 95, and talked to him on the phone. Those are the guys that I look up to. And I just started putting the stumble to it, felt like it was gonna be a stumble, and tried to give it some Hendrix-y type chords, to make it sound cool, and then I added a bridge to that, for a guitar solo, and that one was done, in about ten minutes. I guess I was just in denial about it, like, You gotta be kidding me. [Journey had] just reworked our partnership. I agree to that, but I don't agree that every time you have a fill, you have to play exactly the same thing that's on the record. Possibly. And the legacy continues, with Arnel. And theres been some others, that I think have just been wonderful. Well, yeah. I think they thought I was just going to leave the group and go solo and tell everybody to gowhatever. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. Probably some time ago, yeah, I could have done that. Pete also has a lot of input when he's playing bass. So I was ready to go, go, go, and I think pretty much everybody else in the band was. They love the band enough to lay down on the sidewalk? I remember by the end of that tour [pause], feeling musically toasty, feeling emotionally toasty, feeling vocally toasty, and, um, [pause] telling the manager, I just dont want to stay out here and keep doing this. I met him when Journey was opening up for Jeff Beck, before Steve was in the band. [laughs] But in those days it was a bomb. We were destroyed by thathe was a wonderful singer, a wonderful bass player, and a great guy, and he was part of a real interesting chemistry that Columbia wanted to sign. Lou had called a day off, so I was going to go, but when Lou found out about it, he called a recording session for that night. So why bother having it? I would read in down beat that so and so's new record was out, I'd go to the shop and never see it. So Don Ellis called me and said Herbie wanted me to fly out and meet Neal. RM: Who were the drummers you were listening. So I decided to try drums. We redid everything. I like to play on stage and have that good feeling that comes from the people. When someones fingers get calluses on them, the guitar doesnt hurt so bad. When I did drink, it was in excess. But in January, Jon told me on the phone, I just wanna know. And I said, Dont call it Journey. If wed had a crystal ball back then, we woulda wrote twelve of those. But I didnt see it until the first time it aired, that Sunday night. So at the end of that conversation, I said Look, you go call whatever you wanna do with whomever youve checked out something else. I just needed to stop. Once I lock into a song, the rest of the band comes together fast, so I've decided that it's my job to learn the arrangement and then just play it. Md Interview - Aynsley Dunbar How do you draw the line between playing freely enough for yourself and at the same time, being consistent enough that the rest of the band knows what you're doing? And Jon was telling me, We want to know what you wanna do. I wouldnt drink onstage, but Id get offstage, and when I got in the bus, thered be a chilled bottle of whatever vodka I was drinking, and Id start plowin into it. AD: I left school when I was 15, and immediately formed a trio with a sax player and a keyboard player. All of the toms have both heads, and so do the bass drums. Im _not _whining. I mean, who knew? No. I like doing all of that. Even now, I need a teacher to drive me so I practice and advance more. Every time I saw him he was more spaced out and blank. At home, I've got a drum kit, but the trouble with a drum kit at home is that it's so damn loud, it blows your hearing. AD: I like the albums I've done with the Starship, of course. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. I got a phone call from Jon, and I could tell Neal was on the phone, cause I can tell when the line levels down, and I could hear him breathing, I think. Do you get tired of it being defined by his presence or his absence? *** Its called a band! [laughs] Please. You had that urge, but you didnt act on it. I can understand how they feel. With the other company that Im a part of, Nocturne [a video-production studio]between that and the residuals that I get, yes, I could live comfortably and just hang it up. AD: I picked up a feel for it by watching drummers, looking in books and practicing it. That's how I look at rock and roll drums, or drumming as a whole, actually. The label said, We think you need a frontman. I live just above San Diego, in Del Mar. Well, what Im about to sayIm gonna come across as a prima donna, but if theres any singers out there reading this at this point, theyll understand completely. RM: How much musical freedom does Zappa give his band? Cause I thought it was silly. Aynsley Dunbar - DRUMMERWORLD But our relationships by then were not the greatest. The music was a mix of instrumental orientated rock-fusion and progressive tunes with vocals. So they thought that I would be a good addition to the band. A lot of times, that goes down a lot better than sitting there being a technician. Waka/ Jawaka was also a jazz album. And Im grateful for all of it, I wouldnt trade it for the worldbut it didnt squelch much, yknow? Dont go out and play these songs with someone else and crack the stone. Did you take lessons? So he and I interact the most on stage. The video is a one-camera move. RM: Do you do anything to stay in shape so that you can playas hard as you do night after night? And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. Schon and Herbert flew to Los Angeles to meet with the noted sideman for . The bigger the drum, the more damping you put inside it, and so you're playing less area anyway. Oh, most certainly, I was the new kid on the block with them. I still never wanted Journey to go away, because it was something that I was there from the beginning and started. She would be on one side of the stage with the orchestra, and I would be on the other, so there was a gap between us. I really had to let it all go. **. I got to the top of this hill, and I was in trouble. It wasn't like, "Well, I've played every- thing 1 want to play, so now. But I've taught Scotty Ross how to do it as well, and he's quite good at it. [laughs] I think I needed some time off, what do you think? After you've been around a while, you understand that you can't play everything you've ever wanted to play. He plays rhythm guitar and sings it for a while and we just add our parts to it. Aynsley was very disappointed, but Bruce said, Aynsley, f it! AD: I workout for about an hour before I play, going through a lot of rudiments and practicing coordination between my hands and feet. And it rolls around, and halfway through the song it starts rolling back out. I wasnt really into jamming too much. I said Okay, you do what you gotta do, and Ill do what I gotta do. And I hung up the phone, and when the dial tone came back, I called my attorney, and I said Start the divorce. And he said, What divorce? And I said, The divorce. And I told him what happened. Together they were an all-star group. If you crack itits got so much integrity. I only sing in the shower! I mean, wed get together with Neal, and wed all write the arrangements.
